Singapore Kitchen Appliances Firm seeks Presence in Nairobi
NEWMATIC, a Singapore-based firm dealing in built-in kitchen appliances, is considering opening an office in Nairobi to serve sub-Saharan Africa.
The company said the market for kitchenware for high-end homes and offices is promising, citing a vibrant construction sector in the region. The growth is being driven by high rates of urbanisation with a growing middle-class.
Newmatic chief executive Behram Baluch said operations in South Africa,
Algeria, Ethiopia, Zambia, Equatorial Guinea, among other countries, will be coordinated from Nairobi if its plan materialises.
Baluch said the company will also expand into counties, targeting at least 150 dealership contracts in major towns in the country.
The company hopes to grow its market share by educating Kenyans on importance of good quality kitchenware, especially cookers.
Baluch said about 10 to 15 per cent of fuel is wasted through LPG cookers with inefficient gas hobs and ovens.
“Older gas hobs waste up to double the amount of cooking gas due to incomplete burning and can be a health hazard due to carbon monoxide emission,” he said.
Newmatic Africa was launched in Singapore in 2010 and operates in 20 countries around the world.
It first marketed its products in Kenya in May during the Kenya Homes Expo.
“We have sold a thousand units of kitchen appliances such as hoods, hobs, ovens, microwaves and dishwashers that feature trendy and sophisticated designs,” Baluch said.
